India to have digitised meteorological system by 2012-13
In a bid to strengthen the weather predictions, the government is all set to introduce modernised digitized meteorological system by 2012-13 at a cost of about Rs-900 crore, said Union Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Kapil Sibal today.
"The modernised system contains 54 top class radars, automatic weather systems, automatic rain caging systems with the technical collaboration of France Meteorological Department," revealed the Minister.
Sibal was speaking at a function to release the "National Disaster Management Guidelines - Management of Cyclones" being compiled by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) at DRDO Bhawan in New Delhi today.
Speaking on the occasion, Kapil informed, "We are also planning to launch Hurricane Weather Research Forecast Model for demonstration in the month of October-November this year in Bay of Bengal. The model is a USA-collaboration and it provides accurate prediction on cyclone. If it works, we will include it as well."
Meanwhile, Vice Chairman NDMA, General (Retd) N C Vij, who was also present there, said that cyclone mitigation project for dissemination will be set up for covering 13 coastal states and Union Territory at the cost Rs 2000 crore, which includes setting up temporary shelter and improving overall telephone connectivity in the areas.
