Kournikova keeps Iglesias on the edge

Spanish pop singer Enrique Iglesias says he has tried repeatedly to convince his former tennis star girlfriend Anna Kournikova to marry him — with no luck.

Iglesias spoke to reporters at the weekend after arriving in the Dominican Republic for the first of nine concerts planned across Latin America. He says he’s been involved with the tennis star for at least three years and says she keeps ignoring his appeals to wed.

In his words: "I always try, but she pays me no attention."

The Madrid-born artist is the son of crooner Julio Iglesias.

Edmundo bows out

Brazil’s former international forward Edmundo has decided to retire a year earlier than expected after missing a vital penalty for club side Vasco de Gama.

"I can no longer handle these kinds of emotions... I’m going to take early retirement," he told the press after the match.

The 37-year-old, known to supporters as ‘The Animal,’ enjoyed a career that saw him play in Italy for Fiorentina and Napoli, Japan and his native Brazil.

He also picked up 42 caps for his country, winning the Copa America in 1997, and a runners-up medal at the World Cup finals in France a year later. — AFP

Hatton happy and gay with girlfriend

Well, here’s something you don’t see every day — a boxer at a gay bar. English Hardman Ricky Hatton treated leggy girlfriend Jennifer Dooley to a night on the tiles by taking her to London gay joint The Edge. But the gorgeous blonde didn’t seem to mind, as the pair were snapped giggling and laughing together. Richard ‘Ricky’ Hatton is seen as one of the most popular British fighters of all time. Hatton is a two-time IBF and IBO Light Welterweight Champion, having relinquished the IBF belt, only to step back down to the weight class and beat Juan Urango.

Ex-Lanka chief in fraud

Sri Lanka’s former cricket chief Jayantha Dharmadasa was fined $31,000 by the Securities Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka over his alleged role in manipulating share prices. Dharmadasa, who headed the cricket board from 2005 to January 2008, his son and seven others were charged with illegally boosting the share price of Nawaloka Hospitals, in which they hold a majority stake. — AFP
