July 16: Mike Okoro saved the blushes for Mohammedan Sporting on Wednesday as the black-and-white brigade struggled against Peerless SC at the Vidyasagar Krirangan in Barasat for their second win in the ongoing Calcutta Premier League.

It was sheer individual brilliance from the Nigerian that ensured his team stayed level with Mohun Bagan on the league table. The deciding moment came in the 41st minute when the Sporting captain, receiving a through pass exhibited a brilliant display of skill as he first inside-dodged Peerless defender Satish Bharati, and then outside-dodged goalkeeper Arunava Das to score.

Coach Sabir Ali’s team’s prospects in the league rely largely on how Okoro performs as the others were well short of their display in the previous game against Railway FC last Sunday. Promising striker Theodore Sunday, regarded as the ideal partner for Okoro, was subdued by marker Madhab Das for most part of the game.

However, unlike the previous match, Sporting defenders held their nerve and did not panic when the opposition, led by Arup Singh and under-19 footballer Tilak Saha tightened the screws.
