Leaving now would mean letting the Taliban win power militarily that would be unacceptable for obvious reasons. A change of US strategy in Afghanistan is therefore a must to win that war. But the toll is even greater in terms of psychological damage to the population. A recent study that looked at the psychological health found that a third of the study participants had contemplated suicide, a sign of extreme psychological distress.
