Meenakshi of PSPB in the women’s singles of the first Tata Open all-India badminton tournament at the Bombay Gymkhana here on Thursday. Seeded players were on Wednesday shown the door on a day of theatrical upsets. Women’s top seed Gayatri Vartak and fourth seed Dhanya Nair and the men’s second seed from the UK Rajeev Ouseph, third seed P. Kashyap and fourth seed Anand Pawar all crashed out. Bhat lived up to his expectations with an extraordinary 7-21, 21-19, 21-7 win over sixth seed Ajay Jayaram of Maharashtra. Bhat lost the opener against the unpredictable Jayaram, but bounced back and won the next two games to seal a place in the finals. Neha Pandit wrecked Sayali Gokhale’s dream run, winning 19-21, 21-18, 21-16. Earlier, Gokhale caused the biggest upset of the day when she sent back top seed Gayatri Vartak of Maharashtra 21-19, 15-21, 21-18 home in the women’s singles quarter-finals lasting 55 minutes.
