An action packed, bronze-medal performance in the Beijing Olympics has led to much acclaim for boxer Vijender Singh and adding to his growing commercial viability, Bajaj Allianz on Thursday roped in the pugilist as their ‘youth icon’.
"Vijender’s sincerity, dedication and determination have brought him this far. We hope he can proceed to greater heights and win more medals for the country," Akshay Mehrotra of Bajaj Alliance Life Insurance said.
Vijender, who became the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal, said he would try to reach out to the youth of the country and inspire them to similar heights. "Boxing is fast becoming a popular sport in the country. I think, my success will act as inspiration for the youth of the country," he said.
Vijender also feels more emphasis should be laid on development at the grassroots level. "Yes, it is quite important to work with youngsters and teach them the nuances of the sport and upgrade the standard of the game," he said.
Asked about whether he had given modelling a thought, he said, "Surely I would like to do it, but boxing will always be my first love. Whatever I am today, it is because of my feats in the ring and I will always strive to improve and become a better boxer."
