No meeting until PCB chief picked

Karachi, Sept. 6: The Pakistan Cricket Board’s governing body meeting, scheduled to be held on September 13, on Saturday ran into trouble with the sports ministry making it clear that the meetting cannot be held without the approval of board chairman.

The ministry said the PCB constitution didn’t provide for any governing body meeting to be held without the approval of the chairman and the board is without a chief after Nasim Ashraf’s resignation.

"Under the constitution only the chairman (of the board) can call a governing body meeting or if majority of members give a requisition for such a meeting," sports secretary Ashraf Khan said.

The PCB has been without a chairman since Nasim Ashraf resigned last month following the exit of former President Pervez Musharraf. Khan said unless a new chairman was appointed by the President of Pakistan, who is the chief patron of PCB, the governing body meeting would be unconstitutional. The meeting has been called on the insistence of the International Cricket Committee of the board which wants Pakistan’s future international commitments to be discussed by the governing body members.

Shafqat Naghmi, PCB chief operating officer, declined to comment on the objections raised by the sports ministry.
