Power goes off at Eden Gardens during IPL match
Kolkata: The Indian Premier League match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Deccan Chargers on Sunday evening was suspended for 24 minutes following a power cut at the Eden Gardens due to internal technical problems. The power went off at 7.02 pm and the stadium plunged into near-darkness when the match was poised at a crucial stage.
Power came back at 7.26 pm and the play resumed soon after. "Power supply in the Eden Gardens was disrupted because of tripping in high tension line which led to suspension of the match unfortunately for sometime," West Bengal PWD Minister Kshiti Goswami said.
Goswami, whose department is responsible for the maintenance of the Eden gardens, apologised before the spectators and organisers for their inconvenience. "Such a fault takes place on occasions, but we are so unfortunate that it happened tonight during this important event," he said. It was not possible to say if it was their fault or due to some internal problem of the Eden Gardens, Sumantra Sen, Managing Director of power utility CESC Ltd that supplies power to the city and its outskirts, said shortly after the incident.
However, CESC executive director, D Sen, later said there was no fault on their part. "Power supply to all towers was continuous with normal voltage." (PTI)
