Fresh outbreak of bird flu was reported

HOWRAH: Fresh outbreak of bird flu was reported in the disease-hit Howrah district on Wednesday.

District Magistrate Khalil Ahmed said samples from Uttar Panchla village under Panchla block, sent to the high-security Bhopal laboratory, tested positive this evening and fresh culling operation would be initiated in the area.

The administration has so far culled 1.5 lakh chicks in the district where bird flu had been reported in two blocks - Sankrail and another area of Panchla block - in the past three days, he said.

The culling operation in Uttar Panchla village had not earlier commenced as the area fell beyond the five km radius of other bird-flu affected parts of the district, the DM said.

At least 40,000 chicks has been culled in Panchla block so far.
