Teacher detained, beaten up in custody

KOLKATA, Feb. 15: A school teacher and her son were kept in the lockup of Sagar police station in South 24-Parganas for seven hours and were allegedly tortured by policemen on 11 February.
The instruction to detain the mother and her son had come from a moneylender who wanted to recover the money he had given to the woman's husband ten years ago.
Mr Sobhan Bera, son of the teacher, lodged a complaint against the policemen and the moneylender to the additional chief judicial magistrate of Kakdwip sub-divisional magistrate court, Mr Subhankar Sen, today.
The accused include the officer-in-charge of the Sagar police station, Mr Joydeep Banerjee and his junior colleague, Mr Sudhir Nandi.
Mr Bera, a resident of Rudranagar in Sagar, stated in his complaint that he and his mother, Mrs Purnima Bera, a teacher of Hasramgar Free Primary School, were kept in the police lockup for nearly seven hours.
"The moneylender had given Rs 30,000 as a loan to Mr Bera's father almost ten years ago. In order to mount pressure on the mother-son duo, the moneylender had allegedly instructed the police to detain them," said Mr Kallol Das, president of the Kakdwip Court Bar Association and the petitioner's counsel. Mr Das also said the family had paid a total of Rs 3.24 lakh as interest, but couldn't repay the principal amount. According to him, on 11 February two policemen came to Mr Bera's shop and took him to Sagar police station without citing any reason and put him behind bars. When Mrs Bera heard about the incident, she rushed to the police station. The policemen also put her in the lockup.
The moneylender and his son came to the police station and threatened Mrs Bera and her son with dire consequences if they refused to repay the principal amount of the loan.
Policemen allegedly snatched Rs 1,500 from Mr Bera and assaulted him and his mother in the lockup. They were later released around 11.15 p.m., Mr Das said.
Mr Bera lodged a complaint to the district magistrate and superintendent of police, South 24-Parganas, but to no avail. He came to the court today and lodged a complaint against the accused policemen.
When contacted, Mr Banerjee, OC, Sagar police station denied the charges. "A lawyer of the Kakdwip court is trying to harass me. This is nothing but a malicious campaign," he said. He, however, did not explain why a malicious campaign would be launched against him. The other accused policeman, Mr Nandi, could not be contacted.
