Help for chained woman in Domjur

HOWRAH: Basanti Sardar, the 30-year-old mentally challenged woman who was kept in chains by her family in Domjur for seven years, is finally being treated.

Following a TOI report on February 29, one of Sardar's neighbours - Bapi Thakur - has offered financial assistance for her medical expenses. Howrah SDO Sunil Ranjan Sikdar has also promised to help her.

Basanti, who has received little medical treatment, will finally see a specialist next week. "I will bear her medical expenses for six months. If her condition improves, I will provide further assistance for her treatment at a mental hospital," her neighbour Thakur told TOI on Monday.

Sikdar has instructed the divisional social welfare officer to find out if the family needs any other assistance. "The administration will arrange for the treatment if the family asks for it," he said.

Basanti's mother Prabha is relieved that she will now be treated. "Now that we have the money, we will treat Basanti till she is completely cured," she said. "We are confident that she will be able to lead a normal life," said brother-in-law Shambhu Sardar.
