While Shrabanti’s throat had been slashed, her daughter had been smothered to death. Though Shrabanti’s husband Partha, a BPO employee, had claimed that he was not at home, the needle of suspicion soon turned to him and his friends. After Partha, a Howrah police team detained his close friend Indrajit Das alias Chandan on Tuesday evening. His wife Tusi, who is pregnant, was put under house arrest. Earlier, an interrogation revealed that Tusi visited the Ghosh residence on the day of the murder and had a quarrel with Shrabanti. Tusi had claimed she had gone to the Ghosh residence to enquire about Prapti’s health. The team then detained Chandan’s brother-in-law Sadhan Pradhan. His fingerprints matched those on the pair of surgical gloves found beside the bodies. Police dogs had also tracked down another glove close to a nearby murder. A Jagachha police source said, “Our interrogation revealed that he had supplied the gloves.” Later in the evening, police arrested Samir Barik, reportedly an acquaintance of the Dases, from his Duttapukur residence. Tusi’s call details showed that Barik had called her thrice on the day of the murder. They have spoke for over an hour. "Barik’s fingerprint matched those found in different corner of the room in which the bodies were found," the source said. However, police is yet to home in on a motive. They think the suspects were looking for photographs or CDs. Shrabanti was killed when she tried to prevent them from doing so, said officers. Prapti was killed as she could have identified the assailants.
