Youth allegedly threw acid on girlfriend at Jagacha

HOWRAH: A youth allegedly threw acid on a 20-year-old girl, apparently his girlfriend, on Saturday at Jagachha in Howrah. Two more people were severely injured in the incident. This comes merely two days after the police solved the twin murders of a housewife and her daughter in the same area.

Samar Chattopadhay (27), a resident of C Road in Liluah, threw acid on Santana Das in the wee hours of Saturday. Unable to bear the pain, Santana ran upstairs and hugged Binodini Ray, her landlord Sunil Ray’s mother, smearing her with acid in the process. Meanwhile, Sunil’s younger brother Debashis rushed to rescue his mother and got severely burnt himself. All three were rushed to the hospital and were admitted with more than 80% burns. Samar was arrested later in the day.

A source from Jagachha police station said three weeks ago, Santana and her mother left their house at Paschim Chakrapara in Howrah and rented the two-room flat at Bharat Mata Colony in Jagachha. Santana was having an affair with Samar, who owns a welding unit in Liluah, for the last one year.

"Initially, they had a steady relationship. But problem started in January. Samar has claimed that Santana had started hanging out with three boys, which he did not like. He decided to throw acid on her after his repeated pleadings yielded no result," the source added.
