Sons suspect in death of 60-year-old in Liluah

The victim, Amarendra Hyte, was missing since Saturday. But none of his three sons lodged a complaint. Surprisingly, the body was spotted by none of the family members who use the well regularly.

On Tuesday, a tenant went to draw water from the well and spotted the floating body. The body, when lifted out of the well, revealed tell-tale signs of conspiracy. The hands and legs were tied and the body bore injuries on the face, eyes and legs. Neighbours, suspecting that the family members had a hand in the death, called the police.

Police arrested the sons in the evening. They suspect the old man, who had some landed property in Amta, was the victim of a property dispute.

There are inconsistencies in the trio's statements as well. Eldest son Subhas told police that his "father was suffering from depression". Bikash, the youngest son, said Hyte had left for their Amta home on Saturday night and returned on Monday. But probe has revealed that Hyte went missing on Saturday, right after having dinner at his 321/17 L Road residence.
