Execution of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh has been deferred till April 30. Union External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee informed the Lok Sabha regarding the latest development on Sarabjit on Wednesday.Another glimmer of hope emerged for the Indian prisoner, who was earlier slated to be hanged on April 1 after being convicted of involvement in the 1990 blasts in Pakistan.
Pakistan's Human Rights Minister Ansar Burney has said Sarabjit can be saved if Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf grants him pardon and converts his death sentence to life imprisonment.
He said, ''If the President is ready to give him mercy. I will have no objection and will do my best to save his life.''
There are also reports that Burney has sent a representative to President Pervez Musharraf requesting him to convert the death penalty to life imprisonment for the convicts who have been languishing in Pakistani jails for more than 10 years.
This is a distinct change in tone as the minister had on Tuesday said that Sarabjit Singh was a terrorist and not entitled to any sympathy.
Meanwhile, India has formally sought clemency for Sarabjit Singh. (With PTI inputs)
