Students clash at Besu, 7 injured
Students of Bengal Engineering and Science University (Besu), have been asked to vacate their hostels as fresh tension brewed in the campus tonight. Superintendent of police, Howrah, Mr Niraj Singh, said tension broke out in the campus after a student slapped another student.
Police contingent has been sent to the campus. “The university authorities have asked the students to vacate their hostels tonight. Administration have hired buses to remove students from hostels,” said Mr Singh
At least seven students were injured at the Bengal Engineering and Science University (Besu) campus last night following a scuffle between two groups of students. Tension ensued around midnight when a group of second-year students, allegedly, passed lewd comments at some non-Bengali students while walking down the corridor in front of third-year students’ hall. A verbal altercation started between the two groups which soon turned into a fight. The situation worsened with the entry of more students from other hostels. Some students allegedly hit each other with rods and also pelted stones. The hostel superintendent rushed to the spot along with teachers and non-teaching staff.
“With the mounting tension, apprehending the situation to go out of control, we summoned the police”, said Mr Biman Bandopadhyay, registrar, Besu. Finally at around 3:30 am both the groups submitted written complaints and returned back to their respective hostels. Among the seven injured students, five were taken to SSKM hospital last night and were discharged after initial medication. The condition of all the students is stable now, said Mr Bandopadhyay.
Teachers who were present during yesterday's incident, however, feel that the university authorities should come up with a solution to prevent such frequent incidents.
“Unlike other residential institutes, none of the authorities stay inside the campus in Besu. So whenever such an incident occurs, teachers become mere witnesses as they are not entitled to take any decision”, said a teacher.
