Howrah News Service - Latest news and headlines on Howrah,West Bengal and World: Mid-term tests to be held as usual, BESU situation normal Mid-term tests to be held as usual, BESU situation normal ================================================================================ LOCALCORRESPONDENT on 23 March, 2008 07:55:00 HOWRAH: The mid-term examinations at Bengal Engineering and Science University will be held as scheduled on Monday as the situation in the campus, rocked by sporadic clashes between groups of students on March 19-20, remained peaceful. Vice-Chancellor Nikhil Ranjan Banerjea said the examinations will take place with the improvement of situation and the students, who were asked to vacate by March 21 morning following clashes, can return by Sunday. Meanwhile all the 69 students, arrested for rioting in the campus, were granted bail by a local court. Trouble started on March 19 night when some students, mostly of third and fourth year, clashed with some second year students who were returning to the hostel from outside. Seven injured students were taken to SSKM hospital. Yesterday [Friday], on the occasion of the Holi all students were asked to leave the hostels, but defying the directive some students stayed back overnight prompting the university authorities to call the police and 69 students were arrested from four hostels. The university was in the focus sometimes back when a student died as he fell down from a third floor balcony while trying to escape chasing mates.
