Tension prevailed in the Bengal Engineering and Science University (Besu) campus today with rival students’ wings trading charges against each other.
Some students, affiliated to the Independent Consolidate (IC) alleged that they were being threatened harm by SFI supporters if they returned to their hostels. Similar allegations were also made by SFI supporters.
“Our supporters will appear for the examination despite expected opposition from IC activists,” said Mr Subhasis Bhattacharya, SFI's Howrah district secretary.
The university authorities, however, assured that additional police contingent has been posted within the campus to prevent any untoward incident. The students have been asked to attend their mid-semester examinations scheduled to begin tomorrow. “Students should not miss their examination. We have informed students to seek the authorities' aid in case of any problem,” said Mr Biman Bandopadhyay, registrar, Besu.
The campus wore a somewhat deserted look today, although some students returned to their hostels. The authorities had ordered students to vacate their hostels last Thursday following a scuffle between two groups of students, the previous night.
The university authorities have decided to maintain strict police patrolling inside the campus till the semester exams are over on 1 April. Eastern Frontier Rifles jawans along with Rapid Action Force, combat forces and mobile police personnel have been deployed in the campus. An additional ladies contingent will be posted tomorrow. "If needed we might strengthen police patrolling," added Mr Bandopadhyay
Condemning the recent student unrest in Besu, Mr Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, Union minister of information and broadcasting today said: “The students representing Students Federation of India (SFI) have created trouble within the Besu campus ever since they lost the students’ union polls. I complained to the DG that police had taken no action against the FIR filed by the Besu students’ union, supposed to be a non-political one. I have requested him to take control of the deteriorating situation and maintain a healthy environment during the examinations.” He added that the chief minister once faced immense embarrassment in connection with a Jadavpur University incident, thus he should immediately take some action to prevent a repetition of the same and restore academic environment in the campus.
Around 1,700 candidates will appear for the mid-semester examination tomorrow.
