HC seeks explanation of Riz-Priyanka harassment

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Thursday demanded to know why Muslim youth Rizwanur Rahman and his Hindu bride Priyanka Todi were harassed by police despite having explained in written that they were married under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Justice Dipankar Dutta also asked Samaraditya Pal, counsel of former Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee to submit an explanation into police intervention in the young couple's personal life. In a hearing in the Calcutta High Court, Justice Dutta raised the issue of the alleged harassment of Rizwanur and Priyanka by some senior police officers after the couple's marriage against the wishes of Priyanka's father, industrialist Ashok Todi. Samaraditya Pal was questioned regarding the same, to which he replied that the police had intervened only after Ashok Todi had registered a complaint with the police. Justice Dutta then asked Pal to explain before the Calcutta High Court the reason behind police intervention even after seeing the marriage certificate of Rizwanur and Priyanka. Samaraditya Pal has been directed by the Calcutta High Court to submit an explanation during tomorrow?s hearing in the case. Meanwhile, Pal has requested the High Court to produce Priyanka Todi as a witness in the case, and also to make the complete investigation report of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) known to them. As of now, the High Court has read out only bits and pieces of the report before the lawyers as well as the families of Rizwanur and Priyanka. Pal claimed that his clients are unable to provide a proper explanation without knowing the complete report. The hearing in the case will continue in Calcutta High Court on Friday.
