Howrah News Service - Latest news and headlines on Howrah,West Bengal and World: Priyanka not among writ petition respondents Priyanka not among writ petition respondents ================================================================================ LOCALCORRESPONDENT on 28 March, 2008 02:36:00 It is strange that Priyanka Todi, the most significant living person connected with the unnatural death of Rizwanur Rehman has not been made a party in the writ petition, Samaraditya Pal appearing for Prasun Mukherjee, former commissioner of police and other police officers submitted before Dipankar Dutta of Calcutta High Court on Thursday. Kalyan Bandopadhaya, appearing for the writ petitioners said that the video cassette recording of the Press conference which Mukherjee had convened at Lalbazar would be produced in the court. Pal told Justice Dutta that this cassette was with the media when the latter asked him for it. Mukherjee, the then commissioner of police had told reporters that Rizwanur had “apparently committed suicide”, it was submitted. But the word “apparently” was left out in the reports of the Press conference carried in some of the city dailies, it was submitted. This gave currency to the impression that Mukherjee had said that Rizwan had committed suicide, it was submitted. The Press conference had actually been called to defuse the tension which had ensued after Rizwan's death and the situation was ripe for the commissioner of police for giving an interview, it was further submitted. The police had not called the newly married couple to Lalbazar to break the marriage but to establish an amicable relation with the in-laws of the boy, it was submitted when Justice Dutta asked why was the couple called to the city police headquarters. Priyanka Todi's parents had filed a missing diary after she left home without informing them, it was further submitted. The credibility of Kishwar Jehan and Rukbanur Rehman, the mother and brother of the deceased was doubtful as they did not disclose the source of their information from which they learnt Rizwan was murdered by hired killers of the police officers and Ashok Todi, it was submitted. The non-disclosure of the CBI report put the police officers at a legal disadvantage to defend themselves, it was further submitted.
