CPI (M) lauds UPA Government's 'One China' policy

Coimbatore: Hailing New Delhi's “one China policy” in their draft
resolution, The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also launched a scathing
attack on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Democratic Alliance
(NDA) convener George Fernandes for their flip-flops on Tibet.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the party's 19th congress in
Coimbatore on Monday, General Secretary of CPI (M), Prakash Karat said that the
statement made by BJP leaders last week, attacking the Government's position on
Tibet could lead to the souring of Sino-Indian ties. He also criticised NDA
convener whom he accused of going even further than the BJP.
Continuing with the attack, the General Secretary said that it was the Vajpayee
government that signed the declaration, which states that the Tibet autonomous
region is a part of the People's Republic of China.
China had said that it is open to talk with the Dalai Lama, but with certain
conditions. Blowing hot and cold, Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said,
“The channel for dialogue is always open. Only if the Dalai Lama gives up
his stance on the independence of Tibet, particularly exerts his influence to
end the recent violent outbreaks in Tibet, and admits that Tibet and Taiwan are
inseparable parts of China, then we can continue to resume dialogue with
him.”
Earlier, China had accused the Dalai Lama of orchestrating the rash of monk-led
protests and rioting, the most serious in the Himalayan region for nearly two
decades, in a bid to wreck the August 8-24 Olympic Games.
The spiritual leader refuted the charge, but reiterated that he wanted greater
autonomy for his homeland, not independence.
It is to be noted that New Delhi is making sure that the dragon is satiated
after it dealt with pro-Tibet protestors with an iron hand. It has also assured
Beijing of safe passage of the Olympic torch relay during its journey through
India.
