Mayawati directs cops not to be vindictive on Tikait

With Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) chieftain Mahendra Singh Tikait cowed down after his arrest and subsequent bail on Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati too has turned soft on him.

Lucknow: With Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) chieftain Mahendra Singh Tikait cowed down after his arrest and subsequent bail on Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati too has turned soft on him.

Director General of Police Vikram Singh on Wednesday issued clear-cut directives to policemen not to be vindictive on Tikait, who was arrested, and later given bail, for making objectionable and derogatory remarks against Mayawati. "I have been directed by the chief minister to ensure that no prejudicial action is to be initiated against Tikait, who has been given bail by the sessions court in Bijnore," Singh told reporters.

"Whatever action is to follow will be entirely on merit, without any preconceived notion or prejudices," Singh said. "The law will take its course and we would not allow any undue harassment of any of his family members either," he added. "The chief minister is of the view that Tikait had not only realised his mistake but also tendered a public apology."

Asked about the case of attempt to murder registered against the BKU supremo for inciting an attack on a police contingent in Sisauli village in March 31, the DGP said, "Impartial investigation would proceed in that case as well as all other cases." (IANS)
