KANKSA, Feb. 19: Just a few hours after CPI-M cadres had beat up their party leaders for being denied jobs in local industry at Durgapur, party cadres, engaged as NREGS labourers, thrashed a CPI-M local committee secretary at Kanksa in Burdwan last night.
The CPI-M leader was so badly injured in the attack, he had to be admitted in a hospital with critical chest and head injuries. The CPI-M local leadership today brought a rally in Kanksa protesting against the attack.
According to reports, a group of about 350 party cadres raided the Kanksa No-4 local committee office at Molandighi village around 7 p.m. last evening. Mr Debatosh Banerjee, the local committee secretary was sitting inside. The mob first put off lights and Mr Banerjee was then thrashed to a pulp. They also ransacked the entire office, badly damaging office furniture and documents.
Mr Banerjee was rescued by his party colleagues and rushed to a local hospital. It was later learnt the CPI-M cadres were enraged after a CPI-M local committee member, who was engaged as a supervisor for a NREGS project, had slapped a cadre engaged as a labourer in Molandighi village in Kanksa yesterday afternoon.
The CPI-M controlled Molandighi panchayat had engaged party cadres for digging of a pond under NREGS. The project was to be completed by 1 March. But, trouble began when an inspection officer found that labourers were deprived of a number of facilities, to which, the labourers were entitled to. The inspection officer asked the labourers to inquire about the matter. Later in the afternoon the labourers confronted the project's supervisor, Mr Chidam Gope about the discrepancies that left the latter fuming. He allegedly slapped one of the labourers, Mr Saru Ruidas. Even the panchayat pradhan, Mr Haradhan Mukherjee allegedly remained indifferent when the labourers complained about the matter to him.
This enraged the labourers and they raided the local CPI-M party office in the evening and attacked Mr Banerjee.
Mr Narayan Shyam, CPI-M zonal committee leader of Kanksa said: “They were all our party men. They may have been provoked by some outsider to beat up our local committee secretary. Some of the attackers came to the panchayat pradhan's residence today and confessed to their offence.” Today the party brought out a protest rally in Molandighi. Mr Shyam added: “We didn't lodge any FIR as the offenders belong to our party. We have learnt that five to six people instigated the attack and they have fled from the area.”
Meanwhile, the district party leadership has summoned the four party leaders, accused of nepotism and corruption at Sagarbhanga locality in Durgapur. Mr Debabrata Banerjee, district Citu secretary said: “They have been asked to explain the accusations against them. They would be penalised as per the party’s disciplinary code of conduct if found guilty.”
