Sobhraj to fund girl’s education
Kathmandu, April 26: Notorious international criminal Charles Sobhraj has offered to pay for the education of a Nepali girl, expelled from her house by her parents for having voted in favour of the Maoists in the recently held polls. Sobhraj, 64, serving a 20-year term in Kathmandu’s central jail for the murder of an American tourist in 1975, wrote to a local daily offering help to the girl.
The move is being seen by many as an attempt to woo the Maoists, who are set to form the next government in Nepal.
Lawyers here have criticised Sobhraj for trying to influence the judges through this "political" move in complete violation of prison laws. "Since Sobhraj is not a free person he cannot exercise political rights as a free man," said spokesman for the Supreme Court Hemanta Raut. (PTI)
