Reva to launch next generation electric car in May

Bangalore based Reva Electric Car Company will launch the next generation electric car with solar panel and Lithium Ion battery variant in May 2009. The car will run up to 200 kilometers on Indian roads on a single charge.

The new Reva cars were test through the nationwide Climate Solutions Road Tour, undertaken by Indian Youth Climate Network. The journey, which commenced from Chennai on January 3, 2009, has covered 3500 kilometers and traveled through 15 cities across India.

“The Climate Solutions Road Tour tested and proved the long range capability and technological know-how of the Reva," Reva's Deputy Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Chetan Maini said in New Delhi.

"The cars are powered by next generation Lithium Ion Batteries and are capable of covering a range of up to 200 kilometers per charge. In addition, they have roof mounted solar power panels, enabling them to harness the sun’s energy and further augment drive power and achieve the increased range. Equipped with Global Positioning System," Maini added.

The company is currently setting up its second plant in Bangalore, which would have an installed capacity of 30,000 units per year, besides planning to roll out a new version of its Reva car with lithium ion battery in May.

"Common people have become aware and are interested in having eco-friendly vehicles. We are targeting to sell a total of 4,000 cars each year by 2010," Maini said.

The company sold about 500 cars in 2008 and is aiming to sell 1,000 units, including exports, in 2009, he added.

Maini said the company is currently test marketing in 10 overseas nations, including France, Philippines, Chile, Brazil and Colombia.

"By the end of this year, we will be launching our car in all the 10 new markets," he added.

The company currently exports its vehicle to the UK, Spain, Belgium and other European countries.
