Mumbai outfits hope to tilt balance of power

By Sundari Iyer

Mumbai

Mumbai have over the years emerged as something of a counterpoint for the football domination exerted by Kolkata and Goa clubs, with the likes of Mahindra United and Air India often holding their own against the big names. With second edition of the I-League now upon us, the western Indian metropolis will be out to set up their tent against the traditional powers, and look well-equipped to do so. In brief, a look at Mumbai’s challenge in the weeks to come.

Air India: Air India survived relegation and finished the inaugural I-League in eighth position. Coach Bimal Ghosh is confident of an improved showing this year, and expects a top-5 finish for his team. "Last year the players made a lot of mistakes. I also think we need to improve our away record and should try to salvage a draw when a win is not possible. If our three foreigners perform well and blend in with the team, then I’m confident we can put up a good show," he said.

Mahindra United: After starting the new season with a win in the Durand Cup, Mahindra United will be out to improve on their fifth place finish in the inaugural I-League. After retaining the services of national teamers N.P. Pradeep and Steven Dias, as well the addition of influential Nigerian striker Chidi Edeh, coach Derrick Pereira is confident of a good outing. "If we get a good start we will do well. After retaining Pradeep and Steven the team is more balanced. This year we don’t have many injury problems like last year. I would like nothing less than a top finish. Dempo, Mohun Bagan and Churchill Brothers are some of the clubs we have to keep an eye on."

Mumbai FC: All eyes will be on new boys Mumbai FC as they make their I-League debut. They will be given a baptism by fire as they meet the bigwigs of Indian football Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in their first two away matches.

"There is pressure on us to perform well against two big names of Indian football in our opening two encounters. But I am confident in the work put in by the players, who will be raring to go. It would be great if we can finish the season amongst in the top-4," said Mumbai FC manager Henry Menezes, who has Ghanians Abel Hammond (striker), Felix Abojye (midfield) and James Dissi Ramah (defence) as his overseas complement.
